Non-surgical facelift (HIFU)

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is also known as a non-surgical facelift. The treatment uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, resulting in firmer skin. HIFU also works on tissue just below the skin, specifically an area called the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system).

What is the SMAS and why is important for a facelifting effect?

What is the SMAS and why is important for a facelifting effect?
The SMAS is a network of muscles and fascia covering the cheek. It is very rich in collagen; however, this decreases as we age, resulting in sagging skin. Heating the SMAS using focused ultrasound increases collagen production and causes the area to tighten and lift, hence the term non-surgical facelift.
HIFU can also be used on the body to target fat cells. The focused ultrasound heats up the fat cells, destabilising them and causing them to leak their contents. The damaged fat cells are then cleared by the body’s lymphatic system. The treatment is ideal for stubborn pockets of fat.
